Artist's Description

Not always, but often I will do a second, even a third watercolor of a subject, if it is important to me, or if I think I could do better, which is pretty much always with watercolor. There is always something that goes out of control with a watercolor. And the theory goes that the second painting is easier because you solved the problems of the first and you know the subject a bit more now. In this case it was a plein air competition at the Smith Gilbert Gardens Fall Plein Air Event 2012. In many ways I like this one better than the first one, but I chose the first one to put in the juried show and it won. The judge never saw this one.

About Donald Maier

Donald Maier

Donald Maier graduated from the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts, in Newark, New Jersey in 1968. He won several state and local show awards in the early seventies, including 1st place in oils at the Garden State Art Center in 1971, 1st place for Watercolor at the Red Bank Festival of Arts in 1972 and an Honorable Mention in the Emerging Artists exhibit at Rutgers University in 1973. He had numerous one-man shows in both New Jersey, California and Georgia and has exhibited in many fine galleries in California, Scottsdale, Arizona, Santa Fe, New Mexico and Georgia.
